The Seminoles haven’t been doing much Tomahawk chopping the past couple weeks. This must be a down year for teams with Native American mascots, the Atlanta Braves and Cleveland Indians would agree. Florida State looks to crawl out of a two-game slump this week against the Virginia Volunteers who are a surprising 3-2 in conference play.
The Vols are heading to Tallahassee off consecutive wins over both ACC North Carolina schools at home, but the road hasn’t been as friendly to Virginia. The Volunteers are just 1-3 on the road with their only win coming against lowly Duke.
We can expect Florida State to come out strong at home after back-to-back defeats, but the Seminoles are faced with a 12-point mountain of a spread to climb. They shouldn’t have to worry much about Virginia’s weak offense, which is averaging just 271.3 yards per game, especially since the Seminoles are one of the stronger defensive teams in the ACC limiting opponents to just 80.5 yards per game on the ground and 275.9 total yards per game. However, Virginia has been winning with its defense which is allowing just 285.1 yards per game.
To break things down a little further, we are looking at two teams who have been good defensively and who can’t run the football. This leads me to where this game will be decided-through the air. Most of Florida State’s offense this year has come from passing the football and that’s what they will have to do to beat Virginia this Saturday. Virginia has been no slouch against the pass this season giving up under 170 yards per game through the air. The Seminoles turned it around late last season and this is the first game of a four-game home stand for them. Will home field and a passing attack be enough for the Seminoles to crawl out of the basement in the ACC or will Virginia’s defense keep this one within the number. Jimmy Boyd is locked and loaded on Saturday’s biggest play and he’s got the winning angle pegged in his expert analysis. Don’t miss out on Saturday’s easiest winner this week.
